That said, I was wondering how much effort everyone puts in to learning a particular swim?. Do you ever fish the same swim in succession?. I am limited to close to car swims, so something I tend to do out of necessity....Liam

swim exploring effort |

First of all I would like to apologize for being so demanding of everyone on here. I am housebound and chairbound at the moment with just a four year old for company. This is the only adult conversation I get, and am missing my fishing like mad.

Hi Liam
Sorry to hear you are disabled, Im glad you enjoy your fishing. I will write up some thoughts to this thread, but was wondering. Do you have a beard and specks, known to fish Theal on occasion. Cheers Dick |

Liam.
I often think we all take much too notice of the "favoured swims" and ignore those that look rather bland. I know one on the Loddon that is totally featureless, more like a canal section, but it holds fish, and big ones. Also the nearest access swims are often ignored by many anglers, this may give you an edge. I think you need to think strongly about your baiting tactics when restricted to close swims, making sure that you can bring in the fish if not present. I hope you don't mind me asking but have you joined any disabled angling associations? They really do assist in helping you get out? I always enjoy your posts. Dick, little bit of frost kept you in then? |

Sory Dick no beard. I fish Waising EST Brimton & Aldermaston mostly, a birthday present from my brother, best I ever had.
I am not disabled all of the time I am lucky enough to be able to walk short distances mostly, just having a bad spell because I over did it a bit. I was just wandering if anyone ever cocentrates on realy cracking a swim. Everyone I meet seems to be into roving and trundling. |

swim exploring | ||

Hi Liam,
For the last few weeks,probably since end of September,I have been concentrating on a swim in a deeper stretch of my river. First 3 weeks I just fed the swim and fished another,this was done each Saturday.I now fish the swim weekly but using a lot less feed,to date it has not yet produced as I would have hoped.I am not giving up hope yet though, and am going to extend my search by fishing a swim or two lower down in short periods,but will always go back to the original,given more time ,I think it's a go'er. Cheers Rayo Perchance to dream (fingers crossed'ly) |

Hmmm a few replies whilst I wrote this, but any way have it.Though some not aplicable
Hi All Good point Liam. Next to confidence another of our greatest weapons is knowing the water. On any venue the consistent guys are those who have put in that effort. Usually years of intimate experience. There is a short cut, well two. The first, not many miss, is talk to these folk on the bank, they are often happy to help, but don't be a pain and force the issue. Some inquirers I would call freeloaders, lets say deserve to get out what they put in, nothing. The second, and to my mind the right way is to thoroughly explore swims. This involves obviously looking, but we can do more. Look in drought, river low and at its clearest. Look in flood, spot eddies, smooth runs etc. But most of all spot features, holes, gravel bars, weed beds. A step further, plumb the depth, have a good feel around. I do this in closed season, disappear for hours with rod and note pad. It was early season this year. Thats the reason I asked Liam's description. I spoke to a guy at Theale while doing just that, he was left-handed too as I remember. Where was I, Oh, one can work along whole stretch's of river. Im looking for features not visible. We all know the classic swims. I log those just the same, but try not too fish them, I firmly believe fish can be far more weary in these, certainly the bigger fish which I tend to fish for when times are ripe. To them, such swims, on more pressured waters are danger zones. A good feature is also often found an upstream cast away in the swim where everyone fishes more classic down stream, fallen tree, stump, steep walled bank or whatever. All this may not be applicable to the day trip fisher. Where one goes to fish on the day. I do not like to disturb a swim too much, and can read pretty well the likely depth etc. But its still worth some tests. So most accurate is a quick plumb ( with a float attached ) around your chosen swim, I tend to just have a few feeler casts with a plain lead, checking depth, bed make up, and snags. Before I bait up in the wrong place. Or more to the point to find the right place. In any given swim there are usually at least two lines fishable. I prefer a less disturbance approach so try to pick near bank swims. I will often feed up a far bank line to try later, Id fish the near one first though, as any fish caught on the far line will undoubtedly end up tearing up and down your near bank line, upsetting it unnecessarily. I seem to be rambling, sorry if I state the obvious. Im venting pent up fishing anticipation that has to be redirected. Funny , I sit here because I have not got ESP ( another thread ) unless it stands for Extra Stupid Prat. I totally misunderstood my good fishing buddy, all my fault I add. I sat this morning waiting on my frosty door step, for he to turn up for a well exciting days fishing. He is always early, so gear at the ready, in the doorway at 9-15, for 9-30. Come 10-00 am, ten fags and cold with numb bum, I go in and check my E mail, upon rereading his message discover Im too early, two days too early ! So I took it out on you lot. Cheers Dick No G guess why, Prat ( me ). I'll wait to later to fly the flag. |
