What you pay dictates just what you get when it comes to fly rods. I have a small forest of eye-wateringly priced Yankie jobs (Sage mostly), but the quality of cheaper rods has risen enormously in recent years. Check out the Reddington (now part of the Sage Corporation) CPS range - excellent, Sage-quality action and finish. Around £250 in the UK, $250 in the States. Check out Sportfish UK's website for the range - they do a great 9ft, 4-piece, 5-weight that weighs nothing and casts like a dream. Nice "budget" top-quality fly rods. The other year I also bought a 9ft, 5-weight, 4-piece St Croix 'Legend Ultra' for £200 in Britain - http://www.purelyflyfishing.com/stcroixlegendultra.htm Lovely, beautifully finished, wand of a rod, too. Cheaper in the States. For Scotland, though, I'd go for the Reddington - it's a bit faster in action and can belt out a line if the wind is gusting strong. Last Edited By: Paul Boote 03/05/08 12:37. It's a good bit of kit and is available at £135.32 at http://www.fishingmegastore.com/acatalog/Orvis_Rods.html. This is cheaper than he paid. I bought a Vision 3 Zone ravel rod when it was on offer at £82.00(half price) to take to France last year. It is an excellent rod, but is about £160. It depends on how often you are going to use it. Posts: 101 (03/05/08 18:02) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	I have to agree with paul, most of my collection are sage in various lenghths and line weights, all are excelent .In trout and salmon this month there are 23 9ft 5 weight on test which might help you , the prices vary from £60 up to £560 .Sage actualy do rods in £160 price range too. cheers Paul

I think they are still available on e-bay reduced from £230 to £150 with Greys unconditional lifetime warranty. Auctions closing at around £100. I will use my Vision 3Zone 9' 5wt. It is an inexpensive (by fly rod standards) fast-ish action rod, which i find best when trying to cast quickly in wind on the streams I fish, where only a small amount of line is out. Others who know more may say differently! The Vision is about £120. You are welcome to borrow it for a waggle before then. I also have the Sportfish 8' 4weight, a real cheapie. It is super for the money. Jon

Posts: 2362 (22/05/08 09:10) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Rather than start a "New Rod Developments" thread, I thought that I'd slip the following in here - after handling and casting with one of the rods mentioned the other week, then seeing this article - http://www.wired.com/techbiz/startups/magazine/16-06/ps_superrods - about a new generation of super-light fly rods (introduced in 2007, so probably fast heading towards 2008/9 Model obsolesence) made from the graphite cloth that U.S. military Predator drones and Apache attack-helicopter blades are made. The rods are indeed incredibly light: the one belonging to a pal that I tried (the rod mentioned in the article) weighed just over 2 ounces, so light I hardly knew "it was there". And a very nice casting rod, too. £600-odd in Britain, though. Can't see the material finding its way into our type of rods for a time, though. £1,000 graphite barbel rod, anyone...?

I've owned four and the action, build quality and after-sales service is superb. Forget the RRP, go on eBay or deal with the MD Mick Bell himself via e-mail and you'd get one within budget. He'll even send one out for you to try on approval.
