Hi Derren - I use mono hooklengths which vary in length though I normally start with one of 18". I've never felt the need to use braid/fluorocarbon.

I use fluorocarbon - length 12 - 48 inches.
I do inspect the line before every cast and replace when I can feel any abrasions. |

most of the time i just use stadard 15lb big game , the clear/white version ,
i lost a very good fish on 10lb flouro , when i think it rubbed against a rock , the 15lb hassince stood up to these sort of snags length is usually around 2ft , if i feel i need to use a coated link for extra protection against snags , i use 15lb snakebite around 18'' to 2ft long with just a fraction of the coating removed near the hook , hopefuly to help in the hooking |

It really depends on the river and the type of swim I'm fishing !!
If I'm using boilies or Pellets I have no problem with covered braids with Stelth or Snake bite, although I try to use a colour that matches the river bottom. Much of my Barbel fishing these days is done with Maggots or Casters where I have tried using Flouros, much prefere the mono's. I usually us a length of reel line, GR60, Fox Soft Steel or Maximia. As for hook lengths, they can vary from a few inches to many yds, depending on the swim and where I want the bait, as opposed to where I want the lead, which is always away from any potenual snags !! Depends on bait and conditions.
Fluoro for maggots, anything up to 6 ft; soft braid 18" to 3ft where I'm lowering in, maybe paste, pellet, worm etc; 6" covered braid with pellet/boilie bolt-rig; I keep the shorter rigs in a wallet and make up longer ones on the bank as required. Until you arrive and see the conditions and choose a swim, you never know what you need, and you may need to chop and change through the session. |

I use ESP strip tease and good old Drennan flouro and plain mono , depends on conditions and what i feel is right . dont always work like that but i try to
make a decision based on what i feel is best at the time . hook length depends on the swim , water colour etc , just be confident in your choice of material
then experiment in different conditions
