Posts: 1338 (03/08/07 20:06) More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Tags : None Having not suffered a single one for about 18 months - I have recently suffered three hook pulls from what felt like decent fish (spreads arms widely - it was this big honest ) and am starting to think it's more than just a run of luck. How would you go about diagnosing the reason for pulls ? I'm not doing much different from last season - use a running rig with an enterprise snag safe link - 1.5 oz lead and 12-15" hook length (have had pulls on Korda IQ and Drennan Sink Braid) with a 0.75 - 1" hair. I test the hook points frequently - Drennan Continental Boilie 6 or 8. One thought I had was that maybe the hair was a bit too long and they maybe foul hooking just outside the mouth. Posts: 40 (03/08/07 20:53) More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	I tend to have the bait about 1/4 of an inch off the bend of the hook, personally I think 1" is a little too long, but hey, what do I know! Also, are you using barbed or barbless hooks? Barbed may well stay put better, but barbless will penetrate more effectivly on the initial strike. Swing n roundabouts there I guess. Hook pulls are soemthing I hear about alot, but luckily, dont seem to suffer from very often! (I hope that hasnt just put the curse on me!) I'll be interested to hear what others say about this.

Hardly had a hook pull all last season........Had 3 or 4 this one already ! I would attribute some to the use of heavy weights in heavy flows.....Unavoidable i'd say. One was a mystery and the other due to not striking when using a large meat bait (When hair rigging I don't tend to strike, just lift the rod !). Hair length-wise I tend to fish with the bait just touching the bend......probably why I catch so many Chub ! A lot of people advocate a 1" hair when Barbel fishing ! Posts: 666 (03/08/07 21:22) More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Rb has a point there, I changed to a Torrix from a Chimera 2 around December, I set the clutch on my reel (XTEA 5000) to balance the rod/line so a fish would really have to pull to take line as I fish a lot of snags. I never really suffered from hook pulls in the past but since the rivers have been high this summer I started suffering them quite frequently, like at least 1 almost every session. I backed my clutch off just a little and they have stopped. I put it down to a combination of the stronger current giving the fish more power in the fight coupled together with me putting a little too much wellie on them, I straightened a few hook as well, no problems in about 4 trips since.......... Clutch normally set quite loose .... all fish have been on - 10 seconds, 20 seconds and 3 minutes - so not pulling on initial contact ... this is what is so frustrating - your over the initial couple of seconds when your sure the bite has turned into a hooked fish and playing them to the net when ping Cheers Graham BAF

From everything you've said, it's sounding like a rig issue?? Maybe the hair, too long, not long enough Switch to a semi-fixed rig maybe. Hope you find an answer to it.

I can almost prove that one was a foul hooking and would suspect that the second one was as well. The fish i hooked in this manner both took of at a blinding rate of knots and both felt like very big fish - the one which had the damage done by the hook was 12lb when caught. If you foul hook a fish the fight is different than when normally hooked.........any of you guys noticed something similar ? Foul hooking, why ? Well the water has been more coloured and the fish have been on the feed more so than in the same conditions in winter when the water temperatures are a lot less. My observations of barbel feeding is that they will often move across the swim looking for food and one they have the free offering they will turn downstream on most occaisions, probably to crush the food in their teeth and then return for another offering. Sometimes they will stay in the swim and go for the next bit of food. Ok this is in clear conditions in summer. Imagine being really on the feed when the conditions are murky and warm. I would suspect that the fish are moving all over the place covering the bottom looking/sniffing out food. This i fear is what has happened to me and the fish has crossed the mainline, felt it possibly........anyway the chances are hightened for a foul hooking to take place. In winter the fish are more lethargic and perhaps more methodical in the way that they would track a bait down in similar murky conditions. There could also be the case where the hook has only lightly knicked the lip and pulled free. Question.....are you guys seeing evidence of this happening with fish being caught and mouths which are damaged indicating a poor hold and a hook being pulled. Sorry to ramble, but it's an interesting subject considering the toughness of a barbels mouth compared to say that of a carp - i lost a 20lb+ to a genuine hook pull as i could see the bait hanging from the fishes mouth. Posts: 78 (04/08/07 13:35) More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	I dont want to seem like i'm boasting or anything but i would like to share this.My barbel fishing style has evolved and now i fish two styles, both using braided mainline and nylon hooklinks.Rolling meat and touch ledgering.size2 or 4 hooks crushed barbs.hook buried in bait.Since starting to fish this way i can honestly say i've only missed one barbel bite when rolling(the fish spotted me i think) and one hook pull(i was taken by surprise) touch ledgering' no missed bites and no lost fish. Everyone seems to be diccussing hair lengths and ratios whereas i think the hair may be the cause of the problem., or possibly the bite detection method.
