Posts: 760 (20/06/07 12:50) More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Tags : None After a successful ebay campaign, i'm soon to be the proud owner of a pair of centrepin reels - a Trudex and a Speedia.. Having never even held one before, my intention is to have a go for Chub on the float and legering for Barbel.. Assuming I dedicate one to each task (lighter line on one - heavier on the other), what are the merits of each for the jobs in question? Many thanks, Declan

I still end up with all my line looking like one of Jack Hiltons old jumpers... I did tell him I was a lost cause, but he wouldnt listen. I use multipliers now.......

Posts: 461 (20/06/07 13:21) More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Sorry Declan, I do own a centrepin,..an allcocks match aeriel,..used it on opening day, trotting around the various flows and eddys of a wiltshire weirpool,..had a fabulous day made all the more fun by using `the pin`,....no barbel , but two perch, amongst other `bits`, at a shade under two pounds apiece. It looks to me that the chap to ask is Paul4Barbus,..I`m sure he`ll be along shortly. Have fun with your reels,..they are addictive. regards,

I pesonnaly would use the speedia for toting and the Trudex for ledgering. Pikerboy. Ps. i am thinking of selling a John Wilson Herritage with spare spool if any one is interested pm a sensible offer.

Another (probably daft!) question - when retrieving line does it tend to `build-up' at one side of the spool? How do you avoid this - do you strip and re-spool the line after each session..? Declan

In fact I have a Trudex II and with such a narrow drum (0.5") it could be awkward to some, so be careful of line going 'round the back'. No build up of line. Personally I use backing see this thread and all of my c'pins are loaded with braid, but there's no right or wrong. paul4

Posts: 656 (20/06/07 15:55) More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	line only going on one side of the drum when winding in ,is a problem for some,i ain't 100% sure why but i think its down to how you hold your rod when retrieving line , whether or not you keep it in one position constantly with the tip under compression forcing it to follow the same pathway to the spool thereby loading the line on the same line-lay building up in level instead of spreading out across the drums face.probably more of a problem with wider spools i'd think. a lot would also depend on how you retrieve line. 1.using the handles 2.Batting the rim 3. twizzling.sticking a fingertip into a suitable receptacle and twirling the spool by rotating your hand at the whist (you have no idea how i struggled to keep that last sentence Clean ) to try and combat the line bulking at the left-hand side of the spool you could rock the rod slightly (left to right) as you wind in & change the rods position while retrieving.To make the line take various routes through the rings to the spool. if you do find your line-lay lop-sided then (if trotting) cast again and allow a longer trot down to take all the line off the spool then on retrieving the line.Stick the butt into your hip to steady it ,move your hand up the blank a bit and grip in a strangle hold with your thumb and fore finger leaving your other three fingers to act as a paddle to guide the line back & forth to get a linear line lay across the spools drum. we its worth a try. steve I try to be funny... but sometimes I merely look it http://www.angelfire.com/sd2/chavender/

In the comfort of my living room the Trudex seemed to be `free' enough to easily lob a lead underarm. My initial opinion changed totally after trying it on the bank. Luckily, I had an old tesco-bag in my rucksack where I deposited the resulting sorry-mess of reel and line to sort out at home later, prior to mounting my trusty fixed-spool.. I've decided the Trudex needs a service so i've emailed Garry Mills and await his response with breath baited.. The Speedia has only seen action in the garden so far, but i'd say it is definately in a different class.. It spins easily (and keeps going for a good 50 seconds) and is more `user-friendly' with its wide drum.. It'll probably see some action at the weekend.. Anyway, i'll get to the point of my post - can anyone recommend some good, sharp scissors to cut through the birds-nest tangles which are likely to be a part of my future fishing-life.. Declan

I'll reserve judgement on casting as I struggled to achieve two rod lengths! I bagged a Bream of about 4lbs and a Chub that might have just nudged the same weight.. I'm glad no one was watching or they'd have cringed at my technique, but at least I managed to get them into the net! Note to self - must remember to have my thumb in the general vicinity of the 'pin when the ratchet screams and I strike like a madman Declan

Most beginners spin the drum too fast. Better to let the reel catch up than over run. As for servicing - do it yourself.Clean the spindle and bush with WD40 then lightly oil it with 3 in 1 sewing machine oil. Brush off all the debris from the drum and cage and wipe them clean. That's it.

I love to walk along the derwent or dove with 1 rod, c/pin and a bag of bits and bobs, a couple of tins of meat and a few pellets. I usually like to fish nearside margins, so casting aint a problem, an underarm lob is sufficient. Best fish to date are : trent 10-8 derwent 9-8 dove 11-15. Not huge fish i know

Servicing - I'd never spend money when I don't have to so stripping, cleaning and oiling the Trudex isn't a problem.. Thing is, I believe it needs a new pin (which is worn) and (I assume) the corresponding `tube' that the pin goes-in.. If it's possible to DIY I'll buy the bits and have a go.. Steve.. I've seen the cartoon - Mr Know-it-all bloomin Cherry.. It's about time `Peter' told him that no one likes a smart-arse! I'd try and emulate the centre-pin fishing experience described, but I'm afraid any similarity would end with the loss of the Chub in a snag.. $:\$ Declan

A little fella, a tailor in Bradford, knocks them out for me very reasonably. Keep an eye out for forthcoming reviews in Dangling Times and Anglers' Wail.
