Been thinking about paste fishing, there's lots of talk about people catching barbel on paste, wrapping boilies or pellets in it. Wondered if some
people might be willing to share their barbel related paste fishing tips, especially related to issus of feeding paste on bigger river etc. If some valuable
discussion was generated it could be collated into a page on the article section maybe? I'm only doing very basic stuff with wrapping a pellet etc in a bit
of paste, sometimes of my own making, and I know I want to learn more - there are probably plenty of others who do too. If you know of good existing articles
or chapters in books then perhaps you could post them? (In line with ScubaSteve's book thread)
Just a thought, if anyone wants to contribute.

From posts that have gone before, most people new to making pastes seem to have trouble in getting ingredients to bind.
There are several additives/ingredients you can incorporate that will largely solve binding problems. Some of these are relatively cheap and others expensive. Cheap binders that have a good chance of working are pastry mixes, flour, weetabix and other cereals. 'Single' type binders can be (to name just a few) wheat gluten, caseinates, egg albumen, milk powders and ground bird seed (eg CLO). The latter is great for solving most binding problems as it contains fibrous material. The addition of a suitable 'food' oil can improve handling characteristics. Soluble ingredients (especially at lower temperatures) can be important and so can ingredients (insoluble) that can be added to open out the paste - so that it slowly dissolves and leaves a trail of bits. Natural extracts - soluble, partially soluble or largely insoluble can be good options here. Eggs are not always neccessary - but this depends on the mix. I like to carry a small bag of dry mix around so it can be mixed with river water as and when needed. Don't ignore the lightly skinned boilie as a quick shave can give you the best of both worlds and will match freebies more closely than paste wraps. There are other options. Potentially a very big subject, but you can usually get most ingredients to bind - just depends on the level of each additive. I'm sure that others will put their views. Cheers Bob |

Thanks Bob, that reminds me that I use sauce flour to bind paste, it seems to work quite well and it's alot cheaper than trying to buy pure wheat gluten
(which I'd tried to source in healthfood shops without success).

i use corn flour when i make my paste for my stillwater fishing. At the minute i'm struggling to find anywhere where i can get a good amount of base mix
for a decent price. Its easy enough to make up the stuff they sell in small bags like the dynamite stuff etc but i am looking for something i can make myself.
Anyone know any websites i can get this sort of stuff from? Anything like fishmeal is perfect but i cant find many places that sell it in decent quantities

cheers guys, theres definetly plenty to choose from. Will have a look what the local tackle shops stock before i buy anything as postage is quite steep

Hi Ken . 
This is a ready made paste by Temesevern. Its lamprey paste , comes with a small bottle of the right amount of liquid for mixing with the supplied base mix. The paste was wrapped around a bait , dipped in a matching dip , then dropped into a bag of liqudised lamprey boillies. The whole lot was squezzed into the paste by gripping the outside of the bag, lots of attraction there !!!. Ken , I think there is more to it than just putting paste on as a bait . The open texture , and the fact you can do things like above make it very versatile . People automatically only use it from the autumn through the winter , which leaves the most productive time of the year for feeding untouched . This still dont meen that the paste has to be used for just the bait , as i put a very sloppy mix into the hole in a korda lead for a burst of attraction .the process above can be done more than once , and you end up with layers of attraction , good for bigger rivers . hatter, thanks for the contribution. i think you're right, and I hope we can generate some discussion into the 'more to it' part of using paster,
like feeding it, good ways to use it in different conditions etc.

Ken, Feeding paste is easy done by molding a few bits of paste on PVA string, tie to the hook or the swivel on hooklink/lead etc. Daz. |

I could go on for a fair while about paste fishing but will just make a couple of swift points that I have mentioned before.
Make up a batch of paste using water instead of eggs, faster breakdown. 20ml of water replacing 1 egg. I would also use less attractors in the freebie paste although I have had success in pressured waters from over flavouring the freebies and under flavouring the bait. There will be times when you are chub'bed on paste so switch to boilie, mind you if the chub are on prod there is little you can do to avoid them other than using a massive bait with a size 1.
