Bloody hell Andy, you've just advertised my secret peg to all the lazy folk who can't be bothered to have a walk!
Joking aside, I Google'd this link last season and had great fun zooming down the river from Dinckley to Preston docks. It's amazing what you spot when you do this and worth a look at. Good luck to all you Ribblers for 2006/7 - 14 days to go and my tackle is ready and waiting! |

My pic is harmless compared to some posts ive read this season! Anyway enough of that.. roll on mid june!! I hope its a good moon day.... |

Southport AA | ||

Hello all, is the Southport AA stretch just past church deeps to the M6 or does it stop. Was looking to join Southport and found out they have a 30 peg stretch, any one a southport member. Cheers and tight lines for the 16th.

Southport stretch | ||

It's only the Church Deeps area. You can access over the fence at peg 30 - the downstream end, which is just at the start of the hill down past the church, or you can access at the scout hut which is about peg 11 or 12 if memory serves me.
The stretch stops at peg 1 which is just downstream from the farm. I think the rest from the farm up to Mellings wood is Preston flyfishers or something. I've heard various stories that you can fish the upstream bit to Mellings on day ticket or pay the farmer but I'm fairly sure it's a club controlled stretch now. I used to fish it a lot but have ventured upstream where it's a bit quieter these days. I've had plenty of good silver fish on the stick including cracking roach and chub, and plenty of barbel out of the stretch, as well as the odd pike and carp. It's well worth a look but bloody snaggy in places as well. It's good fun fishing when the tide is running too, I've had barbel when the river has started flowing upstream! |

heard a rumour today that ribchester have lost a stretch in similar circumstanced to the warrington shambles. anyone heard anything?

Lost stretch | ||

Yes it's true. One of the RADAC stretches has been lost but I'm not sure who to, the newsletter said the rent was put up to an unreasonable amount and the relationship with the farmer wasn't great. It's a shame as it was a fairly quiet barbel length but the salmon lads loved it, with dozens of big salmon caught over the last couple of seasons. I'd heard that a "hostile bid" was put in last year which forced the club to pay over the odds and they werem't willing to do it again. Wouldn't surprise me if a game club got the length which was at Hothersall. In my view RADAC have done the right thing in not being forced to pay over the odds. If this behaviour continues you would see it become impossible for medium sized clubs to compete with the big clubs and wealthier game clubs, and more stretches of river would be lost for the coarse anglers.

At the end of the day, the farmer is running a business and although I completely disagree with whats going on, its a fact of life that the farmer is gonna rent his land to the highest bidder.
I would for sure...Wouldnt you? |

Re: Re:Southport and District AA | ||

i agree andy, if i was the farmer i would go for the highest bidder, its the other club that steals the stretch that is the evil one
if they want to fish another clubs stretch then join the controlling club. |

hi guys, only a few days to go. I've fished the ribble a few times already allbeit on the fly. It's looking lovely and I can't wait for my first Barb of 2006 and 2005 for that matter, got I've been trout fishing far too much these past 2 years.
PS: Interesting discussion guys and I agree that it's a shame when a club loses out on a stretch but what Andy says it very try and my dad is a farmer and some of them struggle to make a crust so at the end of the day it can some times come down to the taste of cold, hard cash. Went into Wigan Angling (yes I've moved to Orrell now, Bnakwalker if you'r there mate) for a pack of hooks and some new line. £77 quid later I come out with a lighter wallet (like a kid in a sweet shop). tight lines. |

Just spent three hours or so bank walking in Ribchester area mainly downstream from village but also had a look upstream from De Tabley.
River very low and clear but looking quite clean considering rain overnight.Went to my favourite spot to watch silver fish spawning and wasnt disappointed.Lots of chub and more dace than usual and one or two large dark shapes! With the forecast for this week being dry daytime on Friday could be a struggle so probably after 4pm for me.Just be nice to be able to take a rod with me again. Best of luck to all and lets make sure we all look after this great river we have! |

Ribble silver fish | ||

Hi guys. Went for a walk myself a couple of days last week and spotted huge shoals fish made up of mainly dace and chub, with some very large roach dotted amongst them. One shoal was right under my feet in about a foot of gin clear water and there were dozens of small barbel turning over in the 8 to 12oz bracket. All in all these fish are there if people could be bothered to fish for them and I'll have a few tries on the stick again this year. One session last year resulted in over 60 fish including 2 roach of 1.5lbs and chub to 4lbs, with many dace in the 8 to 10oz range - a cracking day topped off by 7 barbel caught on the heavy stuff after they moved into the swim and I'd bumped a couple on the stick - roll on Friday...

Anybody do anything yesterday? Me and my mate fished all day and struggled until 6pm when the fish started moving. I was amazed as the weather conditions were as near to perfect as I could have hoped for. But river conditions weren't great with low water and little flow. We moved pegs 3 times and I eventually banked 3 barbel, 2 of 5lbs and one of 6.5lbs. Nothing spectacular but a great feeling to be on the river again. Christened my new Korum rod which I highly recommend to all you barbelers out there - it handled really well and I think it only cost about £125 from Ted's -bought it in the winter and can't remember exactly how much. It's a Korum Neoteric 12' Twin Tip, and comes with 1.75lb and 2.25lb tops, cork handles and screw reel fitting. I'm not on commission, honest! It seemed a perfect rod for the Ribble and I was very impressed with it.
We caught on small pellets, no interest in boilies at all, but I'm sure part of the problem was the very low and clear water. Back on again on Monday, can't wait - rucksack ready and waiting. |
