Posts: 1153 (07/04/07 10:27) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Tags : None I have just been reading an article on the closed season and was wondering what you all feel towards it,i'd keep it as it is to be honest. ----------------------------------------------------------- The current closed season for river course fishing will be scrapped unless scientists can prove it is needed to protect stocks. That is the call from the National Federation of Anglers. At the moment anglers must stop fishing flowing water after March 14,and can only start again on June 16, although the closed season on canals or lakes has been lifted. NFA chief Paul Baggaley fumed: " All other waters users are now taking advantage of rivers but not anglers that pay to use them. The closed season was introduced to keep ordinary working people off rivers at the height of the salmon season. But scientists tell us there is no evidence supporting the need for a closed season". ----------------------------------------------------------- I know we have been through this before but what would your thoughts be on a 12 month river season. Unelected (by the likes of US) officers of Angling acronyms, eh? F.A. for the people I know and fish with means summat else entirely. We have a close season for coarse fish in rivers. We have a very closely guarded close season for salmon, sea-trout and trout in rivers (hell would have to freeze over before it went). We should keep them both and not let the Hard of Thinking mess things up any more than they have done in the past. "Some people drink of the Waters of the Fountain of Knowledge. It would have been better to leave it alone in the first place and go back to the good old days all Waters Closed. But that all in the past. Or rather, mellowed somewhat! I never had a problem when it was a 'blanket' close season. ...And I personally still don't have a problem with rivers being off limits now. What DOES bother me with the present scenario is, I see far too many anglers on lakes and pools fishing for species like carp and tench, when it is blatantly obvious that these fish are spawning! They will move into obvious spawning areas, on mass, in the quiet, shallower corners of the lakes and cast their lines amounst spawning fish. Resulting in MANY foul hooked fish! As for river species, as we know, they too spawn at different times throughout the year and often more than once. They can be clearly seen and targeted by anglers of the same low ethical ilk as those I see on lakes and pools now. So what's my problem? I fear we cannot stop this happening on rivers, whatever form of 'close season' is implemented! And let me stress again...these fish can and do spawn more than once a year. But, if the rivers were to remain open all year? Would this, in effect, not at least 'spread the load' on this happening? $:\$ I know it's kind of 'reverse' thinking! But, as I said, we are NEVER going to fully stop this from happening anyway? I feel the problem is Not with the present close season or indeed the old system...and Never has been...the problem is with these type of anglers...and how will anything EVER stop that happening? Dunna jump on me back! I know there is more to the close season than just spawning fish...and as I said, I'd be 'happier' if we went back to a blanket ban. Regards Dazza.

I fear the 'peak' of angling's popularity during the year would therefore be at the same time as the fish spawn. I say keep the close season, we need to taste reality now and then!!

Posts: 2057 (07/04/07 14:15) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	when i put the a pole up a little while ago,i went on the stage of thought that would keep it on all waters,but now i have changed my mind.why..well because it is, on the whole uninforceable and i see NO reason why it should it be kept. it should ultimley be down to club's,landowners to make the decsion just like we have now on still waters and canals. dave.

I have never witnessed this during the old close season nor have I witnessed it in June July and August when Carp and Tench spawn. Let's have a proper discission not one based on flawed 'what if's' and 'I once heard a story down the pub' type nonsense.

I dont agree with this, as rivers are the basis of our country's aquatic environments. People don't own the fish in the water, unlike in a lake. Wild fish are exactly that- nobody's property and should not be treated as such.
