Ah, but | ||
|
if I had to catch barbel, winter (if we have another one) and summer, and my life actually depended upon it (mandatory death sentence imminent for not consistently catching, week in, week out, all season long), I'd fish boilies and variations on a good one of them (after all, at home the latter can be made to look like and smell like any pellet; most other things, for that matter).

Re: Ah, but | ||

big baits ie any thing over 14mm are a no for me as i find a barbel can investergate more ..so i always stick to small baits as its to do with numbers and % ..so if i had to pick one bait it would have to be?????????????????????????????????????

My choice would have to be my favourite home made paste ,very smelly and known to my mates as "Klobber". Good old spam would be a distant second.
Mind you, these days I would give my eye teeth just to fish a river with Barbel in it! |

Re: bait | ||

there have been several articles in the angling press about a range of coarse fish preferring 'artificial' baits (I'll come back to that if I may) to natural ones.
In a pond, where many if not most of the fish will have been reared not naturally spawned, that is probably obvious - they will take what is natural for them. But in a river (or lough, or other large man-made water with native natural fish stocks), one might expect fish to prefer natural baits. When they prefer, let's say, a boilie to a worm, my question is - do we have a problem? Have we made our waters and fish into playthings, rather than 'hunter and hunted'? Fly fishing is about trying to replicate a natural form, as are some lures in form and all in action (I think?). Back to the 'natural' question: a worm is obviously natural. But is bread? Cheese paste? Boilies? How about attractants? Using pheremones? Is there a line? If so, where is it? Regards to all dan |

Hi All
Had some great replys,as it was only ment to be a bit of fun. But i do think 14mm is very small bait when rolling meat or fishing the Spam. What do you all think Tight Lines and Happy Barbel Fishing.Nigel I mysef have had one on TWO 18mm Halibut Pellets. |

I found out today that you can buy Spam by the yard. Well, not quite, but a log of about 15" by 5" across from my local CRS supermarket can be had for around £7.
Should make two or three decent sized baits |
