Kamasan Barbel Maxx Hooks |

Anyone use Kamasan Barbel Maxx hooks? I was using them last night and things did not go well! Me and my bro were using two rods each, 2lb TCs for barbs and a heavy feeders with worms for chub, grrr all we got were eels, but I digress, finally my rod went from pointing to sky to straight down at the water, shaking violently, GREAT, hit it, arm nearly pulled out of its socket, struggle, fight, fish reluctantly coming my way then nothing! When I looked at the rig the hook had bent. Quickly a new rig is set up and in my haste got cast straight into a snag, pulled it in and that hook had opened out too!

Not trying to be funny, just asking a question If you "don't have these problems with Drennan Barbel Specialist hooks" then why change? paul4 |

Hi John,
I had problems with straightening and with hook sharpness, probably threw away 5-6 from every pack of 10 straight from the packet, have switched to Korum S3 seamless hooks and really like then, never had a blunt one from the pack, not had one go blunt with use yet, pulled a few substantial branches out of the Kennet last week (you know the ones that always float past and always catch your line after you have painstakeingly got your rig in exactly the right spot in the swim.) and my hook stayed straight, true and sharp. No need to think about which way to wrap a knotless knot either, bonus. Give them a try, you will not be dissapointed. BR Ian. |

I bought them because I liked the look of the gape, a bit like a squared off ESP Raptor T pattern with a slight twist, the Drennan are more a classic "hook" shape so I thought the Kamasan would be better suited for hairs.
It was the first time I had used them last night and now I am going back to Drennans and ESP Raptors. Ian, I will look out for the Kourms, sound great! |

i have used barbel maxx all season and so far had only 2 hooks straighten due to hit and hold situations, but still never lost one yet. what i would sugest with them is slcken the clutch off a tad. it worked for me.

I had the same problem with those hooks, a lot straightened on me even though I don't feel I was being a buly to the fish. it made me change them instantly and i've never gone back to them after that.
I now use the drennan super specialist barbel and the ESP raptors (following advice from people on here). To be honest, I think i like the ESP hooks more because of their slightly in-turned point. I like to think that this lessens the likelyhood of a hook being damaged on a stone on the river bed. A few other people will also recommend you the drennan continental boile hooks too. |

Have looked for my original post about this and couldn't find anything to hand. It's possibly been archived now. I know it was posted around mid july as that's when I lost 4 fish on the same day through hooks straightening on me.

Any hook that has the potential to straight when playing a fish would go in the bin for me. I've been using the Pallatrax ones this season and find them even better than my old favourite Drennan Continental Boilie hooks.

Been tempted, bought some different new hooks, tried them and always go back to me old faithful - shame that they don't make them anymore - well they do - same name but different pattern.
Got a reasonable stock though - but will never forgive Nash unless he gives me some of the old pattern! Only one barbel hook pull in 3 years ain't a bad return. Unfortunately most hook batches seem to vary - 'jelly 'ooks'- bin them. Cheers Bob |

Found nearly all the Teflon coated patterns to be a bit of a liability for 'toughness' most I have tried have been too easy to straighten for my liking...

I used to use Drennan Barbel specialist (and still do a bit) although Horsesnipples recomended Barbbel Maxx which I now use most of the time.
They are razor sharp and have had no problem landing big barbel on them. |

DBSS for me and Pallatrax -The Hook, like the in turned point of the latter. Neither have let me down.

If it lets you down once (or before you use it)
- test it at home (which you should have done before). It never fails again as it is binned You should do this with every piece of tackle. That way if you ever loose the fish of your dreams - it is because of something that happened then - and not because of your tackle choice. Plain simple advice. |

Hooks are a tackle item that you experiment with at your peril.
I've heard great reports on the Palltrax 'hook' and the Korum Seamless, and while both have very impressive specs I'm sticking to ESP T6 Raptors. Very strong, very reliable, good quality control. |
