Elipse ok after two years in the shed?

         Hi there

I havent been barbel fishing for two years...recent fatherhood saw to that (which I have discovered is the only thing to top our sport by the way!).

Anyway, I was wondering if the Elipse pellets i bought from this site would still be alright to use on the hook? Do they have a limited life? They have been sat in the tubs they were delivered in more or less unopened for the past two years.

Cheers

Maybe a few things to mention about the life of pellets.
The old elips and bfw salips contain a lot of oil (25 to 33%), but they also contain a colouring agent that also acts as a strong antioxidant. This probably extends their usuable life.

Purely as an experiment (I usually renew bait stocks every season) I retained some pellets and sealed them up. Every now and again, I'll open the bag up and have a niff - sad but true. Now, before someone leaps on me I'll make it plain that...

Hi Jason,

The bfw elips do not have an official 'best before' date which is why we don't put anything on the labels.

It really does depend on how and where you store them. If stored in an airtight container in a cool dark place i.e in a bfw black bucket in a dark corner of your garage (shed is probably too hot at times), they should be good to use from one season to the next but you can usually tell by smelling them. I wouldn't use them if they smell a bit rancid or acrid...

Why do you think there are sell by date's - mainly to get fishermen to replenish stocks on a regular basis.

I would hope that if there were dead fish cropping up on sections & the diagnosis was out of date pellet feed, then we'd all think differently. As it is not one stockist or angler has come out to say using pellets stored over a year will damage the fish or worse kill it.
With Elips I have disposed of them after 12 months, as visibly they went patchy and lighter in colour.
I haven't carried out any experiments with old bait; however I'd always have a nagging doubt if I used them. Personally I'd buy a fresh batch, especially when they don't cost the earth.
