What do most people use for there hooklength and mainline breaking strain? I normally use something like 10lb mainline with 12lb or 15lb coated braid hooklength.
I was talking to my local tackle shop owner today and he pointed out that it would be better to have the breaking strain the other way round. As in, 12lb line with a 10lb or 8lb coated braid hooklength. Because if you are going to break your line, it would be better to have the weaker line closer to the hook. For example, if you...

Surely the rod you use plays some part in this, they are after all a shock absorber and the more through action the rod the lighter the line, in theory, you can get away with - i use 10lb but use 15lb IQ as the hooklink because of the bottom i fish over. It also depends on how you play the fish, so many variables that there will never be a definitive answer to this but just guidance from peoples personal experience dependant on the conditions fished in etc etc. None of us are right or wrong....

the reason i use heavier hooklink than mainline is if i am using a braid hooklink and a mono main line, it only takes a tiny nick
in the braid to weaken it quite dramatically, thus why i use a heavier hooklink, in over 48 years of barbel fishing the only time i have landed barbel with line still attached from someone elses loss was with very fine lines ie 2lb tc ect, barbel are probably better at getting rid of hooks unattached to rods than carp even....j.w

I fish spate rivers but typically not rock strewn, the 12lb Big Game works well - point being it actually is 17lb BS. I have experienced no problems with the 9kg PowerPro braid either. If I was regularly fishing the Ribble or some of the Wye with its rock ledges I might do otherwise but 15lb Big Game and Quicksilver leader sorts that.

1. Here's the simple answer...

hooklink should be weaker than mainline.

2. Here's the snag...

Modern Barbel fishing is using a hybrid course/carp technology and methods. We use beefed up Avon rods known as a Barbel rods, these generally are only recommended for lines of 10-12lb; then we use the carp style hair rig made of coated braid (for abrasion resistance and camou) generally these are manufactured to a BS of over 15lb
3. Here's the real world...

the thing is and this is especially with braids when barbel fishing, a lot of the time there is sharp rocks and flints ect on the bottom, braid weakens severely if even only getting slightly frayed or nicked by these, far more than the mono mainline, thus the main reason for using heavier hooklink than mainline mate....j.w
