im decided to go for a cottage on the severn at bridgnorth and then get a BAA membership and go fish the teme during the day and then fall back on the severn in the evening. Cheers for the help again.

As I said there are barbel all the way to Chatsworth so presumably they will be at Rowsley as well.....the river would certainly suit them

I am not sure what access would be like as it is trout fishing area (at least during the summer and autumn).

The problem with the fish in the higher reaches is that they are never fished for so may not even recognise bait.....they also tend to be fairly tightly localised.

If you have legal access then why not give it a...

There have been a lot of barbel caught at the Whatstandwell weir (I used to live about 2 miles from there).

It is not the most reliable of areas though.

There are plenty of barbel all the way up to Chatsworth but , as said, it is all mostly trout fishing water.....I am/ have been a member of some of the trout fishing clubs and have seen a lot of barbel which are never fished for but access for a non member is impossible.

You nearest area for reliable fishing...

There maybe a few barb's up near whatstandwell but i would imagine they would be starting to get a bit thin on the ground up there, it turns into more of a trout river the further north you go of derby. Derby and downstream there are plenty of the old wiskers though (they seem to do a good hiding job from me though).

Hey guys, im trying to plan a holiday and ive found a cottage with a private stretch of the derwent at Whatstandwell, are barbel present, does need to be lot as im planning on joining a club with a stretch of the derwent i could fish during the day. I think its just below the wier at Whatsandwell if that helps.

Only really ever fished the first pond as when I first started I didn't even know the location of the second pond. Have only ever fished the second pond once and didn't get into anything but that means nothing and have been told that there are some good tench in there.

Haven't ever fished the river up by the ponds for barbel - its got a nice glide to it but haven't ever heard of any barbel being caught from that section.

does the stretch by the 2 ponds hold much?it just looks really nice.
i also like the look of the 1st pond(the square one)although the second ond looks like it could do some nice tench with the features.

MBR,

Have got an E of H ticket myself. The pools at Haslams hold alot of good carp, had a 15lb last weekend and have lost two bigger fish already this season. Only ever fish the first pond that you come to, which also holds some good tench and bream and loads of small fish.

For barbel, Darley Abbey by the weir used to be good but struggled myself there last year and the dog walkers, kids etc are a nightmare. Get yourself down to Borrowash - you can park in the E of H car...

thanks for that morston,i have looked at that before,but i am getting the e of h ticket and wish to explore their waters.
i have been told of chub,carp and barbel around the raynesway area.
as i said,ive tried the stretch at darley park but i wont be going back as i cannot take the dog walkers or rowing club anymore.

Try the Belper water or Federation water at Duffield.

hello,new to this forum...im after a bit of guidance.
ive always fished still waters up untill last november when i tried a day at darley abbey a couple of pegs down from the wier and i had 6 chub between 2 and 4 1/2 lb.i then went back several times to try for barbel without result.

Despite my concern about the overnight frost, I opted to try my favourite stretch of PoD yesterday afternoon.

Having arrived at about 3.00pm, the first thing I did was to use my digi. thermometer and was pleasantly surprised with the reading 46F(8C) Encouraged by this I set up my usual Elips rod , baited up and then got out my 13ft match rod with Okuma (Sheffield) pin and Avon float plus maggots and started...

The Harrington have a couple of pools the other side of Darley Abbey.

One is quite small and gets very weedy in the summer and a slightly larger 'doughnut' shaped pond. Only ever fished it once, didn't catch much, just a few skimmers I think....but it is quite close to the river so there could be all sorts in it. It seems quite popular, theres normaly a few people fishing it, even when the rivers are open.
