Hi to all Nene barbel anglers.
Just dropped onto the site and saw that me (or rather my book on the River Nene) was mentioned about six months ago. As it is out of print and so expensive to buy on Amazon, eBay etc, I thought I'd give you the gist of what I said in the book.
First and foremost, the 12 lb barbel from about 1969-71 was taken by an 18-year-old Peterborough sixth former from Orton Staunch (I think it's known as Orton Lock these days). It was weighed, witnessed...

Went yesterday for the first time since the season ended. Nice little lake about 2 acres with some lovely tench in it. Anyway, they are very shy so only hit one bite on the worm, the float sailed away on 3 other occaisions but i got nothing for my troubles when i struck. I reckon these devils know which end of the worm has got the hook in. Fish rolling in my swim as well. Maybe next time.

Hi Bob.
Had a walk along the river on sunday.As you said,its very dirty at the moment.I also saw some big carp laid up in some lilly pads.All looked 20 plus.No doubt i will latch into one at some point.
I didn't know about the barbel going into the mill cotton pools.Why oh why do they do that?There's a great little backwater running through the complex.So why didn't they put them in there?
I've fished Barkers 3 times so far.And only had 1 tench.Don't know if...

Well the Nene is just about at summer level but it's pretty dirty so can't really see much. Have seen the odd carp cruising, could be interesting hooking one i saw Friday............ smoking clutch came to mind.

Nige, you fished Barkers yet ? Heard from the tackle shop that 8,000 barbel were stocked into Mill Cotton pool recently. Christ it must be full now with all the carp and other species. Plenty of people there Saturday getting their string pulled. Just how did they get...

Hi Tom,
Was out on Tuesday night.River was up and still rising.Bit too windy though so only stayed for a couple of hours.Had a large fish on for about 10 seconds and then the knot at the hook went.First time thats happened this season,and it felt like a very big fish.Was also out with Alex on Thurs,Fri.But like you say,the water had dropped around 8 to 12 inches.Only chub and bream feeding.

was out for the last time last night for a few hours,river dropped bout 8'' while i was there temperture was 45 and dropped to 44 by the time i left.no bites to say.

i think ive got muddled up,the fella which i think was named steve had two fish in that session a 17 and the 20.think the 17 was the 33.5'' and the 20 was something 35.5'' probably even longer can't remember.i will have to invest in a little tape measure.the nene fish does look long bob and a stunner.wish i measured the 13 i had in september whats in the gallery,i know its up there.would love to know how she's doing now, she had a bit left to fill aswell

Look in the Nene gallery......page 2. The fish entitled whacker was caught by Jason at 12lb 2 ounces. I caught it a year later at
11 3/4lb in the September, 2 years ago. Not been seen since but it was a long fish, i estimate 35-36". Very lean with no weight, if it had been an Ouse fish ??

stuff made of dreams!i can't get over the length of it think the last captor said it length was 33.5'' or something.looks like its still got plenty left to fill aswell.the more you look the more you kind of dream

Yeh,i believe it is the same fish.Looks in very good condition for its size and probable age.Can't imagine what it would be like hooking something of that size.Bet it was like hooking a submarine.

the wensum fish is lovely,and huge!!!looks like the fish that done the first wensum twenty the other month or so,is it?,would keep you grinning for a very long time

Hi Noddy,thought you'd moved away or something.Sorry you havn't had much success on the ouse.It's a hard river to get to grips with.
I'm looking forward to a change of species and warmer weather.Will no doubt bump into you guys down at ringstead for a bit of a chinwag.

Bob. Gave up on that weir pool as a bad job; all we have had out of there is small chub, loads of ruff (taking massive hooks) and eels. Looking forward to the warmer weather so I can throw a fly around again after the chub and carp. Not gunna bother with the Vauxhall ticket this year, spent a too many cold nights in Bedfordshire with no fish to warrant the cash. Definately sticking to W&DAC, backbrooks and lakes this year though and exploring some of the more unknown spots on the Nene....

John, where have you been hiding then ? long time no posts. Come on, you must have a one of those wier pool barbel by now ? Up to the Trent on Friday for the weekend with the "other" crowd and then got next wed, thurs and friday off. Sooo plenty of time to be on the bank Nige, I'll probably bump into you down at the Ringstead complex some time, might even get a W'boro ticket and have a session down...

Nige, Bob & other "Neners", probably see you all in closed season on Brightwell, maybe have a dabble for the tench but come April the deadbait's getting out there Nene at the moment is producing loads of bream between 5 & 6lb, and a few between 7 & 8lb (my best this year so far 7lb 10oz), chub are being a bit slow on main river (nothing much over 4lb 8oz) and the barbel are still non existant!

no probs nige,was spoding out a parti blend mix with all the other usuall bits and bobs thrown in with a good helping of pineapple csl they were loving it,in the swims near the locks there's always fish in that area.back to barbel was out friday in the winds ended up packing up at 630 the tree's next to me looked a bit fragile.didn't fancy getting a knock or the kit getting smashed, think was in with a good chance of a fish too.better safe than sorry eh.well done on the catch...

Hi all,
Out again today,fished into darkness as usual.No propper bites until 6.30 and had the same fish that Alex caught yesterday.It must be the only barbel in the area that's hungry at the moment.
Tom,cheers for the tip for the tench at Ringstead.Will give it a go.

Just back from a very quick 2 hour session, had a 9lb 4oz. Result !! The fish certainly seem to be on the feed. alex

are you nige,i'll be carp fishing brightwells in the close season so no doubt we'll bump into each other and have chat bout barbel and stuff.was carp fishing barkers and could never get away from the tench they love there big beds of particle's
