Hi all,
with the new season approaching i am wondering weather to try something new with my approach to the boilies i am using for Barbel.
Last season i stuck to The source boilies and Nash Scopex Squid and livers but didnt really have that much to show for using either, most of my Barbel came from Halibut pellets wrapped in paste!
A couple of days ago i was talking to a very successful Carp angler who swears by using sweet flavours and nothing else such as Pineapple or tutti frutties...

Source and trigga are both prooven quality baits on the rivers you are fishing but pellet will probably outfish both in the summer. My chosen route would be to select one recognised year round boilie for the season and introduce/try throughout the summer whilst concentrating on pellet or pellet wrapped in paste (same as boilie). come Autumn/winter the barbel will have seen a regular supply of your chosen boilies as feed and be right on them when the temperatures...

Oh sure there will be exceptions but on the whole bloodworm boilies, forget 'em. The barbs like GLME, liver pdr, yeasts, and a few secret (?) others. It's a very competitive market in the bait game. Any percieved innovation will be jumped on by the bait buyers. Some baits work better than others whether it be for carp, barbel, or tench. Sounds like you've fallen well and truly into the bait trap to me
i was there a couple of years ago, until someone rescued me !
That was when it got really hard using spicy meat, so i changed, to boillies, then pellets then back to a different boillie, and on and on, if i blanked more than twice it had to be the bait, so i'd give something else a go. My advice is, choose a bait that you know is catching Barbel, and stick to it exclusively, i know the feeling of ' I can't...
