Have used Krystonite for four seasons and only known it part once on a fish. Have used for both mainline and hooklink with no issues. Tried IQ Soft last season (as its 100% flouro not fluoro coated mono) in ten and twelve pounds as hooklink and had not trouble with that either.

Vanish I hand tested before fishing with and I would never attach it to the end of my rod!!

Tried Fireline Crystal quite a bit last year when I managed to get my hands on a few spools (10, 14 and 20lb) at a good price. Handling/performance is very much like standard Fireline and the so 'crystal' is more like an opaque white colour which does take on a semi transparent appearance in water.
Objectively the Fireline breaks well above it's stated strain and have found the palomar the best knot to use.
Will be testing it more thoroughly in the forthcoming season along with may...

Wouldn't touch Vanish with the proverbial Barge Pole ! It lost me a couple of good fish last season !
Going to try X-Line this year, we'll see !
As a hooklink, more than happy to use ESP Ghost or Drennan Flyleader, which I believe are the same line ?!
Also got some Korda IQ to try this year....

Tried a few over the last 3 years, berkley vanish-horrible, stiff & unreliable, vanish transition-a lot softer, no problem in clear, snag free swims, glows a gold colour in air but disappears when submerged! Both drennan &whychwood fly leader are reliable, but expensive. personally I use x-line for both mainline(12/15lb) and hooklenghts(10/12lb), if you shop around £19.99 for 600mts.
Got some p-line on order, will give it a go and let you know how it stands up!

Phil,

Berkeley Vanish is notorious for being a consistent poor knotter and breaking well under its stated bs. I first bought some in 2000 from NZ when i was on holiday. The first time i tried it it broke under not too considerable pressure. The other makes that people have suggested really are safe in all but the worse conditions. 12lb Illusion has never let me down in the time ive been using it. Mind you it did take me a few years to get my confidence back using it, so i know how...

Mono's and fluoro do take on water so be aware of that which can reduce breaking strains by up to 20%. In a line rated around 10-12lb that could make a big difference.

For most barbel fishing it's not an issue as the line isn't submerged for long periods unlike say carp fishing when rigs can be out for days. 24hrs i think was mentioned where it's significant enough to make a difference.
