mamofan,
Well, "useless" might be a bit strong. But puff pastry is better than bread. Just as soft but more resilient - you can leave it in place longer. And in winter I don't like leaving too many high protein baits like cheese in the water - I like to reel them back in! Two or three knobs of cheese carelessly allowed to enter the swim on a cold day could spell the end of your barbel chances.........

And of course puff pastry can be picked off the supermarket...

The Thatcham catcher. Steve.
To say that bread is "useless" is nonsense.
Many years ago I read a recipe for cheese paste by the great Peter Stone and have used ever since and caught some great Chub on it.Use one full size loaf (not sliced) cut off all the crust and cut into 3" cubes. Allow 4 to 5 days go stale(this is secret) IT MUST BE STALE). Soak with water place in a cotton cloth, ,I use a large hanky, squeeze out all the water and knead in cloth till smooth, it...

while I was fishing yesterday, some little terrier came up and started helping itself to the paste. obviously not stinky enough!
puff pastry is layers of shortcrust with butter in between, rolled out......isn't it? maybe that could be used, but with less oil?

Puff pastry works better than than shortcrust. About 50% pastry gives you a nice consistency.
Bread is more or less useless and the resulting "paste" will quickly disintegrate in water.
