Good morning all
I've been looking in the FAQ as I seem to remember a recent thread about Drennan Double Strenth Mono being good for hook link. I can't find what I thought would be there so can any one give me any information about this mono as an hook link? And may be suggest any others.
  Thank's for any help.

Another alternative, which I might say is more supple, just as thin, but better knot strength, is Silstar match.

To be fair to Drennan I think their aim with DDS was that anglers could use a line with the same diameter as normal, but greater bs. That said, I think the comments so far point to its suitability for some forms of angling, but not barbel fishing.

Scaz,

Plenty of negative comments above and my own would be the same. Stay well clear.

Preston Innovations Power Line is good and dependable and a lot of people swear by the old Silstar / Billy Clarke stuff.

If it is for barbel I wouldn't consider these types of line. They are generally pre-stretched and as a result, when you have a big angry fish on a short string, a sudden last thump can be all that is needed for everything to part company. Better to have a line...

DS is very dodgy, but Drennan fly leader is quite a good hooklength. If i were to recommend some, ultima power plus and berkley xt are very reliable mono/copolymer hooklength materials.

I think one of the issues with DS is its limited stretch, which won't help with species like barbel. There will obviously be abrasion issues too. Put it this way, if you had a one inch diameter mono and a half inch diameter mono both of the same breaking strain, then put a quarter inch deep cut into each one, which would be likely to break first. I wouldn't use DS for barbel.

I've been using it recently for hook link for small fish fishing. I was on the canal last Sunday fishing straight through on 6lb Ultima and not getting a bite, put a 12" 5lb DDSM hook link on and the small perch and gudgeon suddenly appeared, coincidence or is there something to be learnt from this?

I think it may be a little thin for heavier fish (cheese wire effect) and will stick to coated braid links and hairs for chub, barbs, bream, tench & carp but for roach and perch...
