I have had a search through BarbelTalk and some of the
Archives for this topic which has cropped up on a number
of other threads but not as the Subject matter itself.

When preparing my winter baits, and using any form of oil
(Palatant or Essential), I have in the past tended to use
the Natural Emulsifier nutrabaits sell. And it works.
The same goes for dips (amd pellet soaks).
Now I dont want to fall in the trap of fixing that which
is not broken but...

It appears that the fish attracting oils in the ground-up trout pellets become emulsified and do not diffuse properly throughout the water. The addition of ethanol (ethyl alcohol) helps this diffusion of oils and enhances the baits attractiveness to the fish.
As Andy states eggs contain emulsifers but a low
My curiousity about this was raised by the fast action of
Anyway a quick scan reveals that egg yolks and milk proteins are 'natural' emulsifiers so I do not need to add anything! Always thought oil mixed into the eggs looked pretty much emulsified...

That is right, an oil is an oil, whether Essential, Palatant or Bulk.
The emusifier enables an emulsion to be formed, and ensures that oil does not form globules and float towards to surface. In effect, it improves the scent trail at the level you want it, and is particularly useful at lower water temperatures.
It also ease the release of oil from the bait in an emulsion form (whether from boilie, paste, pellet or what-have-you).

Hi All,

I may be wrong but I thought that an emulsifier was added to boilies or paste that contained fish oils to stop the oil from solidifying in the cold water so that the oil can leak from the bait instead of locking up in the bait..
Would'nt have thought that you would need it in essential oils.
Don't know about condensed mild though ( except that I liked spooning it out to eat when I was A kid, fat kid)

I may be missing the point but if using pellets in cold water I take a flask of hot water and dip my hookbait in before casting. It frees up the oils and breaks the pellet surface up which gives me more confidence in winter.
Pellets look horribly smooth and 'sealed' in cold water - this trick 'opens the flavour up'.
Try it - it works.
