I use a minimum of 8lb bs for barbel and fish with lines of varying bs like Paul Boote, for varying situations. I also feel that the hooklength material will have had little bearing on the situation as we all know barbel can be caught on both mono, copolymer, fluoro and braid. Back in the early 80s, i had no real trouble landing barbel in 3-7lb bracket on 4lb sylcast, but wouldnt use that bs now as you never know what you are going to latch into.
That I agree with Dave here concerning the need for balance in ones tackle. But having said that, I also see the valid point's Ray makes concerning the use of braid especially for his art of rolling bait searching the river for takes. Ray's style of fishing has got to be one of the simplest in terms of set up but my word is he so right about location.
IMO 4lb is too light for Barbel fishing, but that isn't the question, the question is.......... was the fact that Warren was on a braided hooklength the reason he blanked, while his mate caught on mono.
I don't think that the reason you blanked was down to the braided hooklength, more likely he was on the fish and you wernt (as others have already said).
